In a monthly column called [***Independents' Day***](https://www.earned-first.com/tag/independents-day/), Earned First is partnering with PROI to explore how independent PR firms are navigating industry disruption while preserving their competitive edge.

In the 11th instalment of Independents' Day, David Ahn, VP of PR ONE, reflects on how Korea's communications industry has been remade by digital transformation — and why the global rise of K-culture has fundamentally changed what clients ask of an independent agency.

1. **PR ONE has grown into one of Korea's leading independent agencies over time, but growth rarely follows a straight line. What were the important inflection points in the agency's evolution, and what drove them?**

PR ONE was founded in 2006 with a commitment to independence and strategic agility. At that time, agencies with 20 to 40 staff couldn’t compete with larger ones, so we focused on fragmented, niche projects. From the start, we launched PR ONE as a large consultancy with over 100 people, aiming to break through those structural limitations and capitalise on economies of scale. However, as we grew rapidly, we hit a bottleneck where our expansion outpaced our capabilities. This ‘growing pain’ period required time to stabilise. These operational lessons shaped our evolution, defined by three major inflection points.

First, by building our reputation through early public campaigns, we increased our brand's awareness and successfully scaled our services from public institutions to general businesses. This expansion built our comprehensive IMC capabilities. Second, while most PR firms focused on traditional media relations, PR ONE proactively planned and executed modern digital marketing campaigns to meet growing market demands. Most recently, we achieved another milestone by becoming PROI Worldwide’s exclusive Korean partner. This connection brought our deep local expertise to a powerful global network. Each inflection point was driven by a single imperative: staying ahead of how stakeholders consume information and make decisions.

1. **Korea's communications landscape is shifting fast, towards digital-first audiences, platform fragmentation, shrinking traditional media influence. Which of those changes has had the most fundamental impact on how you structure clients' work?**

Historically, the Korean PR market revolved around traditional corporate public relations (CPR). However, the rapid shift towards platform fragmentation and digital-first audiences fundamentally restructured our business. Recognising this shift early on, PR ONE made a bold move a decade ago by establishing digital advertising teams and investing heavily in digital capabilities. While many other agencies remained focused on traditional media, our early digital transformation propelled growth as the market expanded.

This early shift allowed us to successfully expand our portfolio from traditional CPR into marketing PR (MPR). MPR enabled us to participate and grow our footprint across broader markets without the limitations of ad agency and PR firm boundaries. We’ve become an agency renowned for exceptional campaign execution. Today, as audiences consume information across a growing ecosystem of niche digital platforms and social channels, traditional media is no longer the sole source of brand and corporate reputation. Consequently, we’ve fundamentally restructured client work into an “always-on omnichannel” framework. This architecture creates dynamic messaging ecosystems where earned, owned and paid media converge in real-time.

1. **K-content and Korean consumer brands have reshaped how the world perceives Korea, and that creates both opportunity and complexity for communications. How has the global rise of Korean cultural influence changed what clients ask of you?**

The global surge of K-culture has transformed client expectations from "how do we communicate locally in Korea?" to "how do we scale a Korean brand's narrative authentically on the global stage?" Clients no longer seek standard localisation; they crave global cultural relevance. For example, past PR ONE campaigns like those we created for Coca-Cola incorporated Korean-style nuances into their content. This approach was successfully implemented across European and Asian markets and regional bridge organisations.

LEGO’s children’s and adult-targeted campaigns showcased unique local trends and received widespread praise. Drawing on K-culture insights, our creative ideas have been adopted as official campaigns in several countries demonstrating Korea’s positive influence on global marketing.

We navigate intricate cross-border narratives and bridge cultural nuances across diverse regions such as Southeast Asia, Japan and the US. Our Korean-led creativity enhances the power of global campaigns. This evolution from a national PR agency to a global brand strategy navigator allows us to connect local authenticity with international appeal.

1. **AI and data are reshaping agency economics everywhere, but the pressure points differ by market. Where is that shift creating the most immediate change inside PR ONE, and where are you more deliberate about the pace of adoption?**

Within PR ONE, AI and data are revolutionising reputation analytics, trend forecasting and media monitoring efficiency. We’ve seen rapid adoption in areas where quantitative data fuels insights such as our pioneering work in reputation metrics and data-driven sentiment tracking. However, we approach creative ideation and final strategic positioning with greater deliberation and caution.

While AI is a powerful accelerator, the core of strategic empathy, cultural nuance, and high-stakes crisis counselling still requires deep human judgment. Technology powers our speed, but human intuition defines our precision.

1. **Korean chaebols and multinationals entering Korea both represent significant client segments, but they come with very different communications needs and decision-making cultures. How do you navigate that?**

Navigating between Korean chaebols and multinational corporations, demand a delicate balance between two distinct operational cultures. Chaebols typically prioritise rapid responsiveness and comprehensive stakeholder alignment within their hierarchical structures. They also need to navigate Korea’s unique regulatory and public opinion ecosystems. Conversely, multinationals often focus on global compliance, structured governance and localised adaptation of global brand guidelines. We bridge these worlds as cultural and strategic translators. For chaebols, we introduce global best practices and digital-first agility. For multinationals, we provide hyper-localised ground-level intelligence ensuring their global messaging resonates authentically in Korea.

1. **PROI membership gives independent agencies global reach without sacrificing local identity. In practical terms, what has the network unlocked for PR ONE — and what does Korea's perspective contribute back to PROI that wouldn't otherwise be there?**

For PR ONE, PROI membership has unlocked a valuable borderless network. This enables us to support Korean clients expanding overseas and assist international brands entering Korea with trusted on-the-ground partners worldwide. In return, Korea contributes a vibrant and dynamic market perspective grounded in cutting-edge digital infrastructure, rapid trend adoption and the global phenomenon of K-content and consumer innovation. It serves as a powerful testing ground for next-generation communications strategies, giving PROI partners a front-row seat to trends shaping the future of global marketing.
