Attention is easy, authority is earned
The real challenge is building credibility that travels across an increasingly fragmented information landscape, says Toby Doman.
Power over public opinion no longer sits with institutions alone. For communicators, getting attention is no longer enough and the real challenge is now building credibility that travels across an increasingly fragmented information landscape.
For generations, authority was relatively easy to recognise. Newspapers, broadcasters, governments, universities and established experts helped shape public debate. They decided which voices got heard, which stories mattered and which claims were taken seriously. Effectively operating as information gatekeepers.
That world hasn’t disappeared. But it has changed dramatically. The question for corporate affairs and communications professionals is simple: who has authority now, and how do you earn it?
